

He was born December 26, 1940 in South Weymouth, Massachusetts and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church from 2001 to 2014.
He was a graduate of Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1960. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Maine in Orono, Maine in 1965. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1965-1976 and served on active duty from May 1, 1966 to April 30, 1968. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
He served on the Board of Directors for the Craven County Partners in Education from 1988 to 1991, was a member of the Craven County Crime Stoppers from 1991 to 1992, was a member of the Ionic Lodge #583 from 1974 to 2014 serving as a Past Master in 1998 in Cove City and was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons and a member of the Sudan Temple.
He was employed as the shipping manager, special projects manager, order processing supervisor, and receiving supervisor with Johnson & Johnson in New Jersey from 1968 to 1973, was president and general manager at the L. R. Sermons General Merchandise Company from 1973 to 2010 in Fort Barnwell, NC and was the general manager at Fort Furniture Company from 1973 to 2005 at Fort Barnwell, NC.
He married Leslie Dawn Sermons on December 7, 1969.
He is preceded in death by his parents William M. McCombs, II and Elizabeth Turnbull McCombs.
He is survived by his wife Leslie McCombs of New Bern, his brother James Randolph McCombs of Florida and his sister June Elizabeth Matinzi of Massachusetts.
A memorial service will be held Monday, January 5, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Cotten Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery in Kinston, NC. The family will receive friends following the service
