

Alex George Prochnow, lifetime loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend to many, joined the Lord on Feb. 15, 2015, at the age of 98. He was born Dec. 22, 1916 on the family farm in Converse, Texas. A World War II Navy veteran, he graduated from SA Tech High School and attended Draughon’s Business College. In 1938 he became a charter member of the first Navy Reserve Unit in San Antonio. In early 1941 he was drafted for active duty in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor and was aboard the USS Montgomery on Dec. 7th when the sneak attack by Japan was launched. He served on two other ships as well, the PC1253 and the USS Shea, the latter engaging in the invasion of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as Chief Quartermaster. He earned two Battle Stars and numerous other medals.
In 1943 he married Wilda Mae Hughes from New Boston, Texas. He worked for the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. for over two decades and then Texas Beverage Packers, Inc. for a decade until his retirement in 1980, when he and Wilda moved to Canyon Lake. He was a charter member of the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, a life member of the Pearl Harbors Survivor’s Association, a member of the Alamo Chapter #2 in San Antonio, a life member of VFW Post #8800 at Canyon Lake, a former member for 18 years of the San Antonio Optimist Club, and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in San Antonio for 33 years. He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 62 years, Wilda Hughes Prochnow and his son, Danny Alex Prochnow. He is survived by his daughter, Debra L. Werland, son-in-law Harry Werland, and granddaughters Meredith Manley and husband Aharon Manley, Meghan Farrell and husband John Farrell, great granddaughter Charlotte Manley, great grandson John E. Farrell, and several nephews and nieces.
Service will take place at Zoeller Funeral Home on 615 Landa St. in New Braunfels at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 21, 2015, with interment to follow at 12 noon at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Converse, Texas.
