

Apolonio “Polo” B. Cantu, 79, of New Braunfels, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at his home. He was born to Eusebio Cantu and Pauline (Barboza) Cantu in New Braunfels, TX on April 10, 1936. After serving overseas in the US Army he married Ignacia “Nancy” Medrano on December 1, 1958. He worked many years for New Braunfels Utilities in the Water Department retiring at the age of 62 years. Polo loved the outdoors, traveling and all kinds of sports. In his younger years he was very active in city league baseball and played several positions for the Braves baseball team. Two of his all-time favorite teams were the Houston Astros and football favorites, the Dallas Cowboys. He loved to travel with his wife and together they were able to experience the beautiful scenery of Europe, Mexico, and Alaska. He will be remembered for his outspokenness, generosity, and his willingness to give a helping hand. He loved spending time with family and friends and was very proud of each of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Cantu, daughters, Janie Cantu, Cindy Cruz and husband Adam, and Yolanda Cantu and husband Manuel Rodriguez; sisters, Lola Ayala and husband Tony and Maria Campos; brother, Viviano Cantu; 11 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, and 4 sisters.
Public Visitation will begin 5:00 PM Wednesday at Zoeller Funeral Home with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Thursday morning at 8:00 AM until 9:00 AM when the service departs in procession to the church. Funeral Mass will be held 9:30 AM Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial to follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pall-bearers are: Christopher Morales, Jimmy Delgado, Marcos Morales, Jr., Rico Willis, Zeik Gomez, Justin Urias, Ryan Urias, and Kyle Davila; Honorary Pallbearer, Sgt. Apolonio C. Gomez.
