Barbara was a precious Christmas gift to her parents. She was born on December 24, 1929 in Lebanon, Tennessee. The youngest of three; older sister Ann, brother Tom, and she were Army kids living worldwide. Barbara always enjoyed the diverse world and the friends she made.
She graduated high school in New York, continued her education and received a degree in Art at the Art Institute of New York. Leaving her parents, she joined Aunt Betty in Dallas and got a job at a prestigious department store. It was there where she met and married her boss, Gil. At this time in the world dating your boss was forbidden, so they dated on the sly. They were married on Halloween night, October 31, 1953. Their vows were interrupted several times by little trick or treaters. It was a solemn but very happy event. Barb’s parents, brother, sister in love, and sister joined the celebration.
Gil and Barb traveled a few years before settling in Arizona. Their only son, Mark joined them there. Arizona was home until retirement. They traveled a while before eventually settling in New Braunfels, Texas. Volunteering was always a very important part of their lives.
She is survived by her son, Mark; sister in love, Sandra Crawford; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends, N.J. Bercaw, Sue Hey, Az., John and Elaine Ruiz, D.A. and Carol Witherell, “the other” Barbara Todd, Audrey Harris, Patsy Bueche, and many friends from First United Methodist Church Women’s Circle and the Stephens Ministry. She will be so very missed by Don and Becca Yates and their family and friends. Also missed by Cullen Yates; he and his “Grandma Deaton” were very special to each other.
To Hope Hospice; who was there with love, faith and knowledge to help at the 11th hour. Blessings to All! To the staff at Sundance Inn; you gave love, care, and devotion to Mrs. Barb. She returned your love and care. Special thoughts, love, and respect to Dr. Randal Jacks for many years of care and knowledge. To Zoeller Funeral Home; they always have answers, solve dilemmas, and show love and faith. So many more to thank, but there are not enough proper words or space for all that needs to be said. God Bless and Thanks to all.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 2:00pm at First United Methodist Church. Assistant Pastor Harold Sassman, a friend for many years, will perform the services.
