Delmer was born on July 16, 1936, in Vidor, Texas, to Otha Edward and Alice Beulah
Wright Oldbury, the sixth of nine children. He served in the United States Navy for four
years before going to Active duty in 1958. He was honorably discharged four years later
in 1962. While in the service, he enjoyed boxing and leading his fellow servicemen in
Sunday church services as Group Leader while aboard the USS Lexington. A devout
member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he also served as Ward
Mission Leader and Ward Clerk.
Delmer graduated from Vidor High School, began his college education at Lamar Tech
in Beaumont, Texas, then transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah,
where he graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in child development and
family relations. Among the jobs worked over the course of his life, Delmer found great
purpose in serving as a Mobility Instructor for Braille Institute in Los Angeles, California.
Delmer retired as Assistant Chief of Juvenile Probation for Orange County, Texas.
While in the Navy, Delmer met a certain Raymond Staten who happened to have a
lovely sister named Elaine who Delmer met in December of 1959. They fell in love and
were married the following summer on July 2, 1960. They were sealed to one another
on October 18, 1961, in the Los Angeles, California Temple. They made their home in
California, Utah, and finally settled in Texas where they raised three sons in
Mauriceville. Unfortunate weather events ultimately guided them to New Braunfels
where Delmer spent the last six years of his life close to loved ones.
Delmer loved his family deeply. He was extremely close to his parents, siblings, sons,
and grandchildren. He devoted much of his retirement years to family history and
genealogy and leaves a tremendous legacy centered on the importance of family and
eternal connections.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Modesta Luella Oldbury Willey,
brother Burdette Edward Oldbury, brother Lewis Dean Oldbury, sister Frederica
Maureen Oldbury Peck, brother Otha “Blue” Everett Oldbury, and sister Joissine
Oldbury Tucker.
Delmer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elaine Marie Staten Oldbury; son Troy
Staten Oldbury and his wife Holly Grondel Oldbury of Marion, TX; son Delmer Theron
Oldbury and his wife Jacqueline Javier Oldbury of San Antonio, TX; son Michael
Edward Oldbury and his wife Charlotte Sellers Oldbury of Baytown, TX; seven
grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation for the family will be from 9-10am on Monday, December 4, at Zoeller Funeral
Home in New Braunfels with funeral service from 10-11am at Zoeller. Burial will take
place immediately after at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park in New Braunfels.
