Erma Mae Smith was born to John and Nina Thomas on October 18, 1929 in Palestine, TX. After graduating from Palestine High School, she met her husband, Elmer E. Smith, Jr., on a blind date when he was home on leave from the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. They married on December 12, 1948, and in 1949 they moved to Houston, TX, where Elmer worked for Humble Oil. When Elmer began working for Diamond Shamrock Chemical Co. , they moved to Pasadena, TX. Elmer worked for Diamond until 1983, and in 1993 they moved to Trinity, TX, and finally ended up in the central Texas area until her death on February 12, 2016.
Presently a member of First Baptist Church New Braunfels, Erma has been a faithful Christian, wonderful wife, and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she is survived by her sister Annie Belle Owens and brother John (Sonny) Thomas, as well as her husband, Elmer of New Braunfels, TX, children Cindy Smith Woods and husband Mike of Houston, TX; David Smith and his wife Denise of New Braunfels, TX; and Pam Hicks and her husband Dr. Bill Hicks of Deltona, FL. She was immensely proud of her eight grandchildren-- Michelle Woods Ayres, Sean Woods, John Hicks, Joy Hicks, Austin Smith, Jeremy Hicks, Jamie Hicks, and Jordan Hicks—as well as her great-grandchildren Chris and Stephen Ayres, Aria and Liam Hicks, Eva Williams, and Peter Hicks and Reuben Hicks on the way.
Services for Erma will be held at the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels on Friday, February 19th at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Erma's honor, to the Benevolence Fund or the Missions Fund at First Baptist Church of New Braunfels.
