After graduating from Baldwin High School in NY, Gene enlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean War. He was trained as an Aviation Electrician and served until 1955. Even though he was in the Navy, he never sailed on a ship. Gene always liked to tell everyone that he proudly protected the shores of Virginia while stationed in Chincoteague where he maintained Naval aircraft including some of the first aerial drones. After being honorably discharged, he worked a variety of jobs before joining the New York Telephone Company where he worked until his retirement in 1987.
Gene met his future wife, Barbara, on New Year’s Eve 1950. They were married on January 9, 1954. During their 67 years of marriage, they were blessed with five children, fourteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Gene’s hobbies included camping, fishing, and cooking. His favorite campground was in Montauk Point, NY where he enjoyed surfcasting for bluefish and striped bass. Family camping trips ranged from Niagara Falls, Canada down to Disney World, Florida. Gene enjoyed entertaining and cooking for family and friends. His house was always open to celebrate holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. Barbara and Gene also planned unusual events such as Limburger Cheese parties for friends in Florida. Gene loved to reminisce about his younger days. He would tell stories about his Navy buddies, his family, and adventures with his friends.
He is survived by his children, Lynda (Mike LaRose), Lori, Eugene (Ellen), Bill (Mary Anne), and Mary (Christopher Goodall); 14 grandchildren, Daniel, Erin, Erik, Michael, Kevin, Alex, Matthew, Tyler, Laura, Zachary, Christopher, Alicia, Christy, and Gemma; and 5 great grandchildren, Ellie, Emilia, Hana, Cayden, and Benjamin. Gene was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was someone friends and family could always count on.
He will be missed!
