

Greg was born on September 5, 1957 in Cheverly, MD to Lee Koelfgen and Carole Koelfgen. He grew up in Los Angeles, CA and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1980 where he met his wife of 27 years, Donna Duke-Koelfgen. Greg and Donna moved to New Braunfels from Reno, NV 21 years ago.
Greg was a journalist for the last 30 years, getting his start in Nevada where he won an Emmy award in 1989 for his work at KTVN-TV in Reno, Nevada. He spent the last 16 years at KABB-TV in San Antonio and was the News Director there for the last ten years. Greg was an innovative journalist, mentor and friend who was loved and admired among his colleagues around the city, state and country.
Most of all, Greg was a loving father to his two daughters. He spent much of their childhood coaching softball and basketball, going to soccer games, concerts and supporting them in all their endeavors. He also took his role as a softball coach and basketball coach very seriously and has left an indelible impact on the lives of the many children he coached over the years.
His devotion as a husband was most notable as he spent the last four years helping his wife through her battle with cancer. His constant attention to her needs, trips to treatment and care provided inspiration to many of his friends and co-workers.
Mr. Koelfgen is survived by his wife, Donna Duke-Koelfgen of New Braunfels; daughter, Quinn Koelfgen Smelser and husband Matthew of New Braunfels; daughter, Hayley Koelfgen of New Braunfels; mother, Carole Koelfgen of Buda; sister, Maryanne Devereaux and husband Robert of Buda; nephew Corey Devereaux; nephew, Marc Harrison; niece, Jennifer Harrison and niece, Angie Harrison-Urlacher. Preceding him in death is his father, Lee Koelfgen and nephew Jeffrey Harrison.
Public visitation will begin 5:00 PM Friday at Zoeller Funeral Home and will continue until 9:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 29, 2011 at First United Methodist Church New Braunfels with Reverend Harold Sassman officiating. Services will conclude at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to, The Greg Koelfgen Memorial Scholarship Fund, donations are accepted at any Broadway Bank.
