Dr. John Joseph Ghidoni, Jr., passed away on Friday, June 22, 2018, at the age of 87. He was born in Yonkers, New York, on February 22, 1931, to John and Frances Ghidoni. John is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lorraine Ghidoni. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Francis Ghidoni of Stockton, California, and lovingly remembered by his six children: Dr. John J. Ghidoni, III, of Fredericksburg, Dr. Lorraine Ghidoni of Dallas, Mrs. Mary Cennamo of San Antonio, Dr. Patricia Davis Ghidoni of New Braunfels, Mr. William Ghidoni of San Antonio, and Mrs. Theresa Ghidoni Mueller of Pearland, and his 18 grandchildren.
John graduated Fordham University and attended medical school at SUNY Long Island, New York. His residency was completed at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. As a Captain in the Air Force he researched the effects of radiation (1961–64). Later he taught at Baylor College of Medicine (1964-69) and at UTHSC San Antonio (1969–2001). As a professor he cultivated a love of learning in the minds of his students, and as a Texas rancher he cultivated herbs, roses, and vegetables on his ranch. In retirement, he consulted for the UT/VA Autopsy service and the Texas Court System (2001-06).
John met his best friend and love of his life, Lorraine Keavney, while they both were working summer jobs. They married on December 23, 1956, and were married for 51 wonderful years.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018, from 2–3:00 pm at Zoeller Funeral Home. The Rosary and Vigil service will begin at 3:00 pm. It will be followed by the Committal Service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family requests an online donation be made to the John J. Ghidoni, MD, Memorial Fund in Pathology, established to fund and facilitate the education of pathology students.
