

Kathryn Hart Wood, age 93, passed away on Wednesday April 30, 2014 in Austin, Texas. She was born January 23, 1921, to Katy Irene and George Sanford Hart in Crockett, Texas. Her father was the only teacher in a one-room school in Houston Co., Texas. Her father taught 45 years, Kathryn 33 years and Karen 30 years. A three generation’s total of 108 years of teaching experience. Kathryn married Jim Ted Wood December the 9, 1939 in Alto, Texas. They had 62 years and 8 months of a Christian marriage which ended in his death Sept. 2, 2002. To them was born an only child, Karen Wood Beal Hobbs. Kathryn is survived by her grandson, Jeff Beal; son-in-law, Ben Hobbs; and Jeff’s father, Doug Beal; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Kathryn taught in elementary, middle, high school and college. She laughingly said that she stayed 13 years in the second grade, before she began teaching at Lee College in Baytown, Texas. She taught her first year in Alto, Texas with her father as Superintendent. She taught with him in Channelview during World War II. Kathryn lived a full and happy life with hobbies: traveling, oil and china painting, photography, clay modeling and genealogical research. Her articles were published in The Shelby County, Alabama History, and The Cherokee County Texas History. She was still putting her 27 years of family research into book form on her computer. She was a seventh generation member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and National Society Daughters of the American Republic. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a president of both the New Braunfels Retired Teacher’s Association and the First United Methodist Church Women. She was an avid bird watcher and flower gardener.
Public Visitation will begin 5:00 PM Sunday at Zoeller Funeral Home and will continue until 8:00 PM. A Graveside Service will be held 2:00 PM Monday May 5, 2014 at the Alto City Cemetery in Alto, Texas.
