

Maggie Joe Turner Griffin, 86 years and 7 months, died April 29, 2012 in New Braunfels, Texas. Maggie was born October 17, 1925, in Houston, Texas; she grew up in Houston and continued living there for most of her life. She graduated from John H. Reagan High School in May 1942. She attended Southwest State Teachers College (now Texas State University).
She leaves behind her beloved husband Joel H. Griffin of 68 years and 10 months, her daughter Cathy Griffin Calnan of New Braunfels, TX and her sons Jay Griffin of Taylor, TX and Lee Griffin of Llano, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Terri Dehlin, Beth Thomason, Jody Griffin and wife Laura Griffin, Jason Griffin and wife Shauna Griffin, J.J. Griffin and Anne Boon and husband Garrett Boon and her great-grandchildren, Bryce Dehlin, Kayleigh Griffin, Hayden Griffin, Hannah Griffin and Samuel Boon. She is preceded in death by her parents Frank Turner and Betty Wilder Turner, her son-in-law Gary S. Calnan and her grandson-in-law Date A. Dehlin.
Maggie was member of the Reagan Redcoats during high school and remained active with the alumnae association until recent years. Maggie and Joel were married in June 1943 before Joel left to fight in the Pacific. Maggie continued her education at Southwest State Teachers College. Upon Joel’s return from World War II they settled in Houston and started a family. Maggie substitute taught for Houston Independent School District in elementary school and taught kindergarten at S.C. Red Elementary school from 1958 to 1967. After a brief time spent in College Station, Maggie and Joel returned to Houston where Maggie went to work for the UT Dental School in 1978 and them over to the UT Health Science Center under the head of the Pulmonary Department Dr. Warren Miller. She continued working for Dr. Warren Miller until she retired in 1985. Upon retirement she and Joel settled into a life of leisure and traveling. In 1999 Maggie moved to the New Braunfels/San Antonio area to be with her family.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church, 1620 Common Street, New Braunfels, TX 78130 at 1 pm, Saturday, May 5, 2012.
