He grew up in Bracken, where his parents owned the Bracken Grocery Store. He was a graduate of Canyon High School and Texas State University. He was a sheriff’s deputy for Comal County for several years before joining the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Highway Patrol Officer. He retired from the DPS in 2007.
He is preceded in death by his father, Roland Heitkamp, and his sister, Barbara (Bobbie) Peace.
He is survived by two daughters, Shelby Heitkamp of Bulverde, Texas, and Ashley Triffet of Missouri; mother, Alice Heitkamp of New Braunfels; nephews Keith Peace, Larry Peace and Kevin Peace; niece Lane Schmidt and numerous great nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Zoeller Funeral Home. Services will conclude in the chapel. The family has requested that memorial contributions in memory of Mike be given to his daughter’s college fund.
