Born May 21, 1981, in Denver, Colorado, Lara was the beloved daughter of Hamid Rafiee of Shelton and the late Nancy Rustico of New Britain. From an early age, Lara was an amazing artist and dedicated scholar, she displayed an extraordinary curiosity and determination that would truly define her life. She graduated with honors from New Britain High School (Class of ’99) and the University of Connecticut (Class of ’03), earning a double major in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, a testament to her brilliance and relentless pursuit of knowledge.
Lara went on to build a remarkable career over two decades as a brilliant product development scientist at Unilever. Her innovative work on iconic brands, such as Vaseline, Dove, and Ponds, touched millions of lives and earned her seven patents and recognition on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She began as an intern, and eventually rose to become an inspiring manager, who traveled the world supporting these brands. Her colleagues thought she was the kindest, funniest person and had an innate ability to make all feel welcome at the workplace. Her contributions were not just professional achievements but more reflections of her passion for helping and improving the everyday lives of others.
Beyond her career, Lara lived life with an adventurous spirit and a heart full of love. In her 44 years, she explored five continents and over a dozen countries, embracing cultures, cuisines, and experiences with joy and wonder. Yet, despite her global adventures, Lara’s favorite place was always home.
She found her greatest happiness with the love of her life, Tavis Tenney of Shelton. And cherished every moment spent with her mother Nancy, father Hamid, and brother, Camron Rafiee, his wife Nichole of Farmington, and her three adored nephews, Liam, Quinn, and Cole, plus her niece Caroline. To them, Lara was more than an aunt, she was our idol, creating unforgettable “Auntie visits” filled with warmth, creativity, and boundless affection. Lara also cherished her best friend Courtney Wason of Canton, MA (spouse Shaun) and spending time with her kids Leo and Makaio. In addition, Lara was loved by a wonderful array of cousins, aunts, and uncles, including Mary Levy of West Hartford and The “Faunties”, Mary Rustico and Joan Adams, of Clinton.
Those who knew Lara will remember her as a true difference-maker; kind, sweet knowledgeable, dependable, and selfless. She never sought the spotlight, instead, she devoted herself to lifting others up. Her vibrant spirit, infectious smile, and unwavering generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She was always fashionably late to every family gathering but, once she entered the room, we all gravitated to her presence. We will miss having her with us forever and love her always.
Lara’s legacy is one of love, peace, adventure, and inspiration. She taught us that success is not measured by accolades but by the lives we touch and the joy we bring. Lara’s life was a testament to the power of compassion, curiosity, and courage. Her memory will live in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
