Lucy (Spranzo) Agostinucci, longtime resident of New Britain, died peacefully at her home on Friday, April 7, 2023, surrounded by her family. She celebrated her 100th birthday on September 19, 2022. Lucy was the widow of Louis (Louie) Agostinucci and was a generous and kind person who loved to entertain and be surrounded by her large family. She leaves her daughter Judy Agostinucci and her husband Richard Prestash, and her son Brian Agostinucci and his wife Maria. She is also survived by her sister Betty Ann Cavanaugh and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Lucy was born in Hartford to the late Louis and Angelina (DiGregorio) Spranzo. Lucy moved to New Britain at a young age with her parents and siblings. She met her future husband Louie, who lived in the neighborhood, through her brothers, Albert and Ralph.
Lucy and Louie were married in November 1942 and moved into their first home on Elam St. in New Britain, which was a prefabricated home, very popular at the time for returning war veterans and their young families. Several years later, they purchased a vacant lot also on Elam St., and custom built their new home where Lucy lived for the rest of her life.
After having worked at a number of places, Lucy went to work at Fafnir Bearings in New Britain where she retired after many decades of service.
Lucy was a fabulous cook and baker. She loved preparing delicious Italian food as well as baking her fabulous Jewish coffee cake and banana nut cake. She also loved to bake a wide assortment of cookies, especially Italian cookies, at Christmas time. She loved to crochet afghan blankets for friends and family before macular degeneration took away her eyesight. Even though her vision worsened over the years, she did not let that stop her. She continued to bowl on a senior bowling league at Laurel Lanes where her friends would tell her to throw the ball to the left or to the right or to the center and she would score 100 or more, which was amazing.
Lucy had many friends. She loved to play cards, “Knock” or 31 with her friends Ann Thibodeau, Sandy Turner, Bea LaPointe, Mary Ann Tombari and her sister, Elsie Pagliaro.
We know that Lucy is now in Heaven, reunited with her beloved husband Louie to whom she was married for 64 years. We know that she is also reunited with her siblings and enjoying good times with her sisters and brothers and their spouses who predeceased her, brothers Albert and Rena (Guerra) Spranzo, Ralph and Helen (Chryzanowski) Spranzo, sisters Millie Spranzo, Mary (Julius) Palmer, Eva (Ralph) Carlino, Elsie (Chet) Pagliaro and her brother-in-law Thomas Cavanaugh.
The family would like to especially thank Avon Health Center for their wonderful and attentive care of Lucy and Hartford Health Care Hospice at Home for their compassionate and empathetic guidance and care in the last weeks of Lucy’s life.
Calling hours for Lucy are on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 9:30am to 11:30am at New Britain Memorial-Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave, New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Noon at St. Ann Church, 101 North St. , New Britain. Burial will be private.
