Andrew J. “Andy” Amen, 87, a resident of New City, NY, for over 50 years, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Andy leaves a wonderful legacy among his family and friends. He was a humble, warm, and courageous man who lived his life leading by example and exemplifying what it meant to be a good husband, father, and friend.
Andy was born in the Bronx, NY, on October 11, 1931 to Vincent and Mildred (Mazza) Amen. Andy spent eighteen months overseas patriotically serving his country in the Korean War as a topographer and surveyor. Andy then spent more than 35 years in the telecommunications business as an executive at AT&T Corporation. After retiring from AT&T, he spent most of his time as a devoted husband, savvy stock day trader, avid runner, proud grandfather, and trusted handyman.
Andy grew up in the Bronx where he attended Evander Childs High School and married the love of is life, Gloria Radice, in 1954. Andy always said that he had the most beautiful bride and that she got more beautiful with each passing day. They shared a wonderful life together. Andy was Gloria’s hero, and she spoke constantly of the happy life they shared together. Andy and Gloria proudly raised two caring and grateful children and nurtured their two loving grandsons, who were their pride and joy. Andy and Gloria loved to travel, cook, and entertain, and Andy’s secret sauce BBQ ribs became a sought-after staple at all family gatherings.
One of Andy’s favorite pastimes was attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and he would drive with Gloria throughout New England on a regular basis to catch baseball, soccer, and rugby games. Andy rarely missed a game; being present to support and embrace his family was his top priority.
Perhaps his most impressive individual accomplishment, Andy picked up running at the age of 55 and completed his first NYC Marathon at the age of 60. He would go on to finish 11 more NYC Marathons, running a number of them alongside his son, James, and daughter-in-law, Barbara.
Andy is survived by his wife Gloria, his daughter Lori, his son James (Barbara) of Greenwich, CT, and his grandsons James II and Daniel. Andy was predeceased by his sister Ann LaVecchia and is survived by his brother Nick Amen.
Farewell Grandpa, we love you. You did good, you did really good. In lieu of flowers, Andy would welcome a donation to a cause that he and Gloria spent their lifetime supporting: The ARC of Rockland. http://www.arcofrockland.org/who-we-are/donate/ ARC Foundation of Rockland, 25 Hemlock Drive, Congers, NY 10920. Services will be private, and a memorial mass will be held at a later date.
