Elisabeth Voigt, 82, of New City, NY, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, suddenly and peacefully in Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY, with her Step-son Rick and his wife Mary, at her side. She was the beloved wife or Richard E. “Dick” Voigt, and daughter of Hans & Margareta Moeller of Germany, who predeceased her.
Elisabeth was born September 16, 1941, in Hamburg, Germany, where she co-owned a gift store with her dear best friend Hedda Ohrt, until she joined “Dick” in marriage at HighTor Vineyards in New City, NY, 1975. Elisabeth and Dick lived a joyful, purpose filled life in New City for the next fifty years with their beloved furry menagerie.
Together, they became pillars of the community, supporting many notable causes and institutions. Elisabeth sat on the Board and dedicated many years of commitment to The Center for Safety and Change, to her local Humane Center, was always very active in environmental protection, supported Institutions for the arts and music, and to those less fortunate in Haiti, Peru and South America. She participated in F.O.R marches and events. She was involved in many aspects of The Peppermill Restaurant which she and Dick owned and ran for 25 years.
She believed strongly that there was room for all religions and faiths in this world and stood beside Dick on many political issues. One of Elisabeth’s greatest joys was listening to Dick play piano with his Dixieland Jazz bands at many clubs, venues, and his alma maters.
Elisabeth is survived by her stepchildren: Richard E. Voigt Jr and his wife Mary, Michael K. Voigt and his wife Vilma, Melissa J. Mason and her husband Daniel, Christopher T. Voigt and his partner Kim; Son in law Scott Mason and his wife Kathy, Sheila Kaligan, and her sister-in-law Sue Bissell-Roberts; Beloved grandchildren: Rachel and Joe Leto, Kelly Voigt and partner Doug, Megan and Kieran Jones, Amanda Boroski, Becca Mason and partner Dylan, Allison Mason and fiancé Nick, Jessica Mason and her fiancé Max, Alyssa Voigt and her partner Matthew, Savannah Voigt, Devin Voigt and Florencia Caces; Fifteen amazing great grandchildren; and many, many long time friends and caregivers.
Elisabeth was an adventurer and life enthusiast. She loved to travel and share that experience with family members and friends. Favorite places were Nantucket, Bermuda, Sanibel Island and Captiva, West Coast and Florida. Several grandchildren have magical memories of a trip with “Omi” to Europe. She enjoyed several vacations with Rick and Mary. She adored NYC and often enjoyed dinners, theater, ballet, and music with dear friends.
Her gardens were extraordinary. She was often sought to employ her skills with flowers/plants and design with many clients and institutions over the years and maintained clients to her final days who sought her care, knowledge and aesthetic design.
She adored time with her grandchildren and had an annual cookie bake, treasured shopping outings in Piermont and Nantucket, memorable sandy picnics on the beach, and was even known for balancing an egg on its end on the sidewalk during the summer solstice…delighting the small crowd that gathered to watch.
Elisabeth had an amazing talent for hosting parties, occasions, and even weddings. All were beautiful, elaborate with candles and amazing food at mesmerizingly perfect table settings. We all still recall the Christmas tree in the “great room” with its rotating stand and real candles. This was always followed by an impromptu sing along led by Dick on the grand piano and anyone who had brought their instruments. The grandchildren recall her fondness for putting parsley on just about everything (smile here), the lighting of dozens of candles, and being allowed to put black olives on their fingers! Her festive gatherings could be at the long formal table, on her beautiful porch or out on the terrace, all surrounded by her gorgeous flowerpots and beds. She had several beloved dogs, cats and feathered friends on perches. They were absolutely part of the family, and the Human Society had her full support.
There are several significant friends (new and old) who made Elisabeth’s last years joyful. Dinners, jaunts to NYC, gatherings in her home, driving her to stores and shops. She was also blessed by caretakers and companions who allowed her to live safely at home until her last day. In the end, the person whom Elisabeth missed most, craved the company of, and missed sleeping beside and sharing her life with, was her Richard. It is with great peace and some tears that destiny has brought them together again. As they were meant to be.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30th , 2024, 11am, at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Ave., Nyack, NY. A reception will follow the service at Hudson House, 134 Main St., Nyack, NY. Interment will be private at the Emmanuel Church, Weston, CT on a later date.
