

James Joseph Sullivan of Garnerville, NY passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013. He was 78 years old. He was born May 27, 1934 in Bronx, New York, son of the late James and Catherine Sullivan. Jim is survived by his sister Mary and her husband Bill. He is predeceased by his brother John and his sister Margaret.
In 1951, he entered the U.S. Navy and served until 1955. In the seventies, he returned to service as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
In 1956, he married Veronica New, and in 1960 they moved from the Bronx to New City.
Jim worked as steamfitter and supervisor in the Steamfitters Local 638 union. In 2008, he was recognized for fifty years of service and membership in Local 638. Prior to working as a steamfitter, he was a Port Authority Police Officer. Jim was also a volunteer member of the New City Ambulance Corps, the Clarkstown Auxiliary Police, and was a long time parishioner of St. Augustine’s Parish in New City.
Jim is survived by his wife Ronnie, along with his daughter Barbara and her husband Eugene McConnell of Garnerville, his son Jim and daughter-in-law, Melissa of Stony Point, his son Doug, and his daughter-in-law, Joanne of West Nyack, his son Keith, and his daughter-in-law Kristen of Suffern, and his daughter Laura, and her husband Jay Delaney of Pearl River. He was predeceased by his son Joseph.
After Jim’s retirement, he spent many happy days babysitting and attending countless school and sports events of his grandchildren.
Known as their beloved Pop, Jim is survived by his 15 grandchildren; Kevin, Greg, Chris, Danny, Tommy, Pat, Katie, Joe, Matthew, Taylor, Kyle, Kasey, Julia, Annie and Megan who will sorely miss his mischievous spirit and loving presence in their lives.
Jim will also be remembered for his big heart and generous ways by the many nieces, nephews, cousins, former co-workers, and dear friends he leaves behind.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 20th and Thursday, February 21st from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, February 22nd at 10am at St. Augustine’s Church in New City.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Jim’s memory to Rockland ARC and to glycogenstoragedisease.com, attention Dr. David Weinstein.
