Jorge Antonio Jimenez Franceschi was born in Cidra, Puerto Rico, on Independence Day – July 4, 1931 –and departed us to be with the Lord on October 9, 2023. He is survived by his sister Anna Franceschi, who lives in Puerto Rico; his brother Luis Garcia, who lives in Florida; his four stepsons, Phil, John, Joe and Steve, and their wives; ten grandchildren, Jasmin, Nicole, Tiffany, Naomi, Natalie, Rebecca, Jackie, Alex, Zach and John; and seventeen great-grandchildren, Xavier, Charlie, Santana, Kira, Noah, Travis, Madison, Jamie, Quentin, Elliott, Wyatt, Israel, Zion, Luca, Kennedy, Hudson and Logan.
Jorge arrived in NYC in 1952 at the age of 21. He worked at construction jobs in various capacities and ultimately received a superintendent’s position in a building on 123rd Street between Broadway and Amsterdam, adjacent to the building into which June Zayas and her five sons moved in 1976. June worked as a waitress at a nearby diner which Jorge regularly frequented. Jorge began to court June and eventually married her in 1983. In 1994, Jorge and June moved from 123rd Street to Rockland County with Phil and Iris. After his retirement from the Jewish Theological Seminary, he drove his wife June to and from Rockefeller Center for many years.
Jorge loved his stepsons and his daughters-in-law and would spend countless hours with them. He loved all ten of his grandchildren and all seventeen of his great grandchildren.
He loved to play Dominoes, bet on horses (OTB) and follow his favorite baseball Team, the Mets. He also loved cooking for the family, and especially loved making coffee for his stepsons, who gave him the nickname, “coffee maker.” He continued to drive his car locally until he was 92 years old.
A memorial visitation for Jorge will be held Sunday, October 15, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service Inc., 321 S Main St, New City, New York 10956, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM.
