Sparkill, NY – Our family is saddened to announce that on January 15, 2024, Joseph Anthony Mahon has left his home here on earth for a place where he can sing with a choir of angels. He spent his final days surrounded by family at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY where he passed peacefully.
Affectionately known as Josie, he was born in Clooneagh on February 28, 1940, the youngest son of Patrick and Mary Ann Mahon (nee McGarry) and raised in Bornacoola, County Leitrim, Ireland. At the age of 14, he left home and headed to Dublin City where he bartended. When he was 17, he crossed the pond to Brooklyn, New York where his oldest sister Mary resided.
While attending an Irish dance at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, Joe met his future wife Norah Duggan of Kilgarvan, County Kerry. After a short courtship, they traveled to Birmingham, England where they were married on August 4, 1962, and honeymooned in Dublin. As young parents, Joe and Norah moved back to the US, living in Astoria, New York for five years before heading up to the Catskills. They resided in several small-town communities within Greene County, including Palenville, Cairo, Athens, Greenville, and East Durham which was as close to “home” as he could get on this side of the pond. They also traveled back to Ireland, residing there for three years in the 1980s, and would visit family as often as they could.
Joe worked hard to support his family and at times held several jobs which included being an MTA bus driver in Queens, tending bar at several East Durham resorts, and working as a carpenter for NYC Local 608 which he retired from in 1995. His passion in life was singing, and he sang throughout the years at local establishments in the Catskills and joined the church choir wherever he settled. He was well known for his rendition of “Our Lady of Knock” and would be requested to sing this song through the years at church services, ceremonies, and family gatherings.
Upon retiring, Joe and Norah would split their time between their home in East Durham and Homosassa, Florida. They spent the last two years back in New York to be closer to family.
Along with his loving wife of over 61 years, Norah, Joe is survived by his six children Mary Ann Mahon (fiance Kim Gray), Joseph P. Mahon, Bernadette Bracken (husband Martin), Norah Mahon (husband Todd Howell), Elizabeth Spinelli (husband Al), and Gregory Mahon, his six grandchildren, Claire, Fiona, Danny, Joseph, Katie, and Maddox, six great grandchildren, David, Brayden, Roscoe, Brody, Olivia, and Harlow. Joe is also survived by his sister Kathleen Kilrane of Wren, County Leitrim. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, and siblings Mary, Bridie, Chris, Veronica, Paddy, Bernie, and Michael John. Joe is also predeceased by his first-born sons John and Gregory I, his son-in-law Martin Reidy, and granddaughter Shannon Reidy.
A wake for family and friends will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service Inc. located at 321 S. Main St, New City, NY 10956 on Thursday 1/18/2024 4pm-8pm. A Christian Mass will be celebrated at 10am at St Ann’s Roman Catholic Church located at 16 Jefferson St., Nyack, NY 10960 on Friday, 1/19, followed by a burial at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery located at 36 W.
