April 3, 1933—March 1, 2024
Marilyn C. Murphy of New City, NY died peacefully at home on March 1st surrounded by her loving family. She was 90 years old.
Marilyn was born in Middletown, NY to Gabriel Ciancimino and his wife, Ruth. Marilyn’s father and sister, Gloria, died when Marilyn was a young child. She was raised by her mother and step-father, John Limani. Marilyn attended Middletown High School where she shined as an Honor Society member, Student Council Representative, French Award winner, and Queen of the Prom. Middletown High School was where she met her husband, Raymond P. Murphy.
Marilyn received an Associate Degree in Applied Science from Orange County Community College in 1953. She married Ray on June 12, 1954, and joyfully embraced motherhood with the birth of their four sons, Michael, Kevin, Brian, and Ray J. In the early 1970’s, with two sons in high school, one in junior high school, and one in elementary school, she entered the workforce, becoming an insurance broker, and later joined Bauer-Crowley Insurance of Sparkill, NY, from which she retired after a long and successful career as an insurance executive.
To her sons, Marilyn was larger than life. She was smart. She seemed to know what they were doing before they did, like jumping in puddles, making a mess, drawing on things, and breaking stuff, including body parts requiring ER visits. The truly incredible part was, with all this boy-generated havoc swirling around her, she prepared all the meals (dinners by candlelight) and attended sporting events to watch her sons compete, PTA meetings, and countless school functions. Marilyn also was navigator-in-chief, wielding a Rand McNally Road Atlas and riding shotgun on many camper trailer trips across the country, when she and Ray taught their sons to appreciate the beauty of our National Parks. Marilyn was an avid gardener and a longstanding member of the Clarkstown Garden Club. Marilyn and Ray retired to Vero Beach, where she became a very good golfer and enthusiastically golfed well into her eighties.
Marilyn is survived by her grateful sons, Michael (Cathi), Kevin (Hope), Brian (Susan), and Ray (Elena); granddaughters, Kerri (Daniel), Devin (Roshan), Laura, Claire, Caitlyn, and Erica; her great granddaughters, Delaney and Avery; her sister-in-law and best friend, Josephine Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was pre-deceased by her parents Gabriel and Ruth and her step-father, John; her sister, Gloria; her grandson, Patrick; and the love of her life, her husband of 68 years, Ray.
Visitation will be at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY on March 7th, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Augustine’s Church in New City, NY on March 8th at 10 a.m.
