DR. SYLVESTER B. ALMIRON, JR., a trailblazing physician, public servant, and humanitarian, joined the firmament of ancestors on April 24th, 2026. Virginia (Cacho), his wife and mahal, walked by his side for fifty-three years until his final breath. He was 82.
He is survived by his brother Rogelio Almirol; his children, Jennifer (Ziegler), Johanna (Johnson), and Christian; his in-law children, Richard, Anthony, and Frances (Acuña); his six grandchildren and beloved extended family.
Born in Agoo, Philippines, Dr. Almiron is predeceased by his mother, Marciana (Boado), a teacher; father, Rev. Silvestre Sr., pastor of United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP); siblings Nellie (Rivera), Norma (Buenafe, RN), Edwin (PhD), and Evelyn (Edelson, RN). He attended Silliman University and the University of the East College of Medicine.
Affectionately called "Dr. A," he devoted his life to serving others, grounded by faith in Christ, with medicine as his ministry. A specialist in internal medicine and nephrology, he built a private practice and clinic in West Nyack since 1981 and held medical privileges at Good Samaritan Hospital and Nyack Hospital, St. Joseph’s Adult Care Home, and led as Medical Director at Nyack Ridge Rehabilitation Center. True to the Hippocratic oath, Dr. A never refused patients based on their ability to afford care and quietly served faith workers throughout his career, including the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate (Sloatsburg) who recognized him with an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis in 2022.
As an immigrant and social justice advocate, Dr. Almiron co-founded the Filipino Association of Rockland, the Silliman University Alumni Council of North America, and the Asian American Tennis Association of Rockland. He held tenure on Silliman's Board of Trustees and received the Outstanding Sillimanian Award in Community Service (2006). As an avid public servant, he held leadership positions at the Lions Club of Rockland (President), Jose Rizal Lodge of the Free Masons (Worshipful Master) the United States Tennis Association Multicultural Committee (Vice Chair), and Parks and Recreation (Commissioner) in the Town of Clarkstown, among others.
Beyond all titles and accolades, however, Dr. Almiron beamed most proudly when called Daddy and Apo Lolo by his progeny. And they carry forth his goodness, genius, and mischievous grin. The Almirons express deep gratitude to the nurses and doctors for the exceptional care of their beloved patriarch.
A viewing and wake will be held on Friday, May 1st, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home at 321 South Main Street in New City, New York.
