Gaida Saulitis, age 99, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, July 5, at her home in Minneapolis. A proud native of Latvia, she was born in Riga on June 20, 1923 and spent her youth gallivanting around town with her girlfriends causing mischief. Perhaps that’s why she’s referred to as “Goofy Gaida” by her loved ones.
She was a brave and strong mother and grandmother who, along with her husband Janis, had the strength and courage to escape the Russians during World War II, leave behind family in Latvia, and live in displaced persons camps for years until they found wonderful sponsors in America. Through enormous difficulties they gave their family a better life in America and we are thankful.
Gaida was a woman of the sun; she loved spending her time basking in the rays while tending to her immaculate garden, or sipping cranberry juice on her patio surrounded by family. Never one to bite her tongue, she was the picture of a modern woman who was ahead of her time with an infectious laugh that could bring a room to tears.
Gaida is survived by her daughter, Mara; son, Erik; and grandchildren, Maija and Mika. She was preceded in death by her husband, Janis. A private family burial will take place at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis on Monday, July 11, to celebrate the life of Gaida, a woman who was filled to the brim with vim and vigor and had an unmatched zest for life and deep love of her family.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kapalaglodekmalone.com for the Saulitis family.
