Sofia Sarmiento was born on October 13th, 1936, to Rosa Amaya and Fernando Sarmiento in Bogota, Colombia. She was the youngest of five siblings, three boys and one sister, Lilia Inez. She grew up being a strong, independent, and socially vibrant woman. She graduated Sacred Heart High School and then attended Escomo College in Bogota, Colombia for two years. Sofia’s sense of adventure and desire to learn led her to seek opportunities in the United States.
She entered the U.S. on April 28th, 1957, eventually becoming a citizen on her new path. From an early age, she was fond of helping others. This choice was evident in the several organizations that she volunteered in, particularly helping those with handicaps. She also chose a profession that was in the helping field, at the Catholic Medical Center, where she worked for over two decades and retired as a supervisor. While she chose to not get married or have children, she was always expressed unending and unconditional love to all those around her. She gave equal and special attention to all family members inclusive of her nephews, nieces and their children. When various nephews and nieces were asked, they described Tia Sofia as a lover of dogs, especially Amber, an aunt who was great at games, a thoughtful person who was sincere in what she said, and a jokester—someone who would lighten the moment by making others laugh especially in the form of sarcasm. For sure, the parents of these kids would agree on all of this and have a lot more to add. Towards her later years, she devoted all her energy and attention to her mother and sister.
On April 5th, 2017, the good Lord saw fit to request her presence. Rest in peace, Sofia.
