

NEW IBERIA – Amelina Hulin Duhon, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all was reunited with Jesus, her husband, parents, and other loved ones on March 14, 2010 at 3:45 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 10:00 am at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church. Fr. Ed Degeyter will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Janis Dugas will serve as Lector and Eucharistic Minister. Lauren Duhon, Amelina’s great granddaughter, will sing for the mass.
Amelina was born May 26, 1923 to Louis Hulin, Sr. and Marie Althea Romero in Vermilion Parish. She was 86 years old. She was a lifelong resident of New Iberia. She enjoyed bingo, pokeno, cards (especially texas holdem) and going to the casino. She was an awesome seamstress to make ends meet for her six kids and mother that lived with her. Amelina loved to cook for her family and friends, especially fried chicken, potato salad, jalapeno cornbread and homemade bread. She made the best homemade lemon meringue pies. No one could compare with her expertise. Family and friends liked to call her “Jalapeno Lena”.
Amelina was preceded in death by her husband, Essie Joseph Duhon; parents, Louis Hulin, Sr. and Marie Althea Romero (also known as Papare and Mamare); brothers, Otis, Aurelin, Baby Joseph, Lodice, and Louise Hulin, Jr.; sisters, Levie H. Gachassin, Auronic H. Duhon, Lelia H. Romero and Marie H. Romero; and a great granddaughter, Brianna Nicole Dugas.
She is survived by her six children, Betty Duhon of Loreauville, Ronnie Duhon and wife Madeline, Patsy D. Dore and husband Johnny, Janis D. Dugas and husband Nathan, Myrna D. Poche and husband Millard, and Wayne Duhon, Sr. and wife Victoria, all of New Iberia; grandchildren, Elby and Craig Duhon, Michelle D. Verret, Lisa Duhon, Ashley D. Dugas, Pansy D. Landry, Johnnie D. Goutierrez, Tammy D. Hulin, Kimberly D. Segura, Jarrod and Jade Dugas, Stacey P. Guidry, Shane Poche, Erin Poche, Samantha D. Stansbury, Wayne Duhon, Jr. and Sonya D. Boudreaux.
Amelina is also survived by her great grandchildren, Brandon Harlow, Derek Duhon, Lauren, Kristin and Amanda Duhon, Shane Verret II, Kylan and Evan Verret, Johnathan Angers, Kourtni and Samuel Goutierrez, Jardi Hulin, Daniel and Mary-Catherine Segura, Kori Bulliard, Blaire Rene Clark, Riley Mae Dugas, Gabrielle Poche, Baby Grayson Poche due May 2010, Stephan Guidry, Gavin and Jaden Guidry, Baby Addison Guidry due May 2010, Kaleb, Kennady and Karson Stansbury, Wayne “Trey” Duhon III, Jude Boudreaux, Cy Duhon and Coy Boudreaux; and her great great grandchildren, Ellie Lynn Duhon and Kamrin Landry.
Pallbearers will be Betty Duhon, Ronnie Duhon, Jarrod and Jade Dugas, Craig and Wayne Duhon, Jr.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home of New Iberia on Monday from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm, with the rosary being recited at 7:00 pm by Knights of Columbus Council 12997 and the brother Knights of Iberia parish. The funeral home will reopen on Tuesday from 7:00 am until services.
