Darrell Floris, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to so many, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2023, just nine days before his 78th birthday. With his family at his side, He gently closed his eyes to this earthly life and entered into eternal peace and rest.
Darrell was born July 16, 1945 in rural country side of Erath to the late Antoine Floris and the late Mildred Mergist Floris and was one of ten children born to that union. He was raised in a family steeped in their Cajun heritage and learned as a young boy the value of hard work and kindness to others. He met the woman of his dreams through her brother and his coworker. Barbara Segura was the name of that sweet young lady who stole his heart on that day. They entered into Holy Matrimony August 7, 1971, and the rest is a real life love story. Together, they raised a family of five sons, which grew through the years.
Never a man to sit idle, Darrell took advantage of every day and all that nature had to offer. He was quite the fisherman and spent many days with his boys casting a line and setting jugs, working in his garage that had “ten of everything” as his family said, and tending to his garden. Mrs. Barbara reminisced of how Darrell would work in his garden tirelessly, and when he harvested the many fruits and vegetables, he would keep what his family needed and then take off in his truck to give the rest to family and friends, ensuring that nothing went to waste.
This man, who in the eyes of his sons and their families was larger than life, was in reality a gentle soul that lived a simple life, albeit filled with everything he could possible want. He was the type of person that lived life on his terms, not letting negativity spoil his day. He would help anyone in need, no matter the situation, and greeted you with a smile and handshake. And once you met him, he was your friend for life.
It also goes without saying that this man lived for his family. There was nothing in the world that he wouldn’t do for them, and for that, they loved him. Darrell will most certainly be missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and thoughts of those he loved so dearly. We find comfort in knowing that he is at peace and know that he is not gone, only gone on before us. Until we meet again…rest well. We love you.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife and best friend of 52 years, Barbara Segura Floris; his sons, Timmy Floris and wife Tracy, Chris Floris and wife Ashley, Clay Floris and wife Charlene and Clint Floris; 15 grandchildren, Lacy Trosclair, Molly Floris, Brody Floris, Sydnie Floris, Ava Floris, Jax Floris, Heather Frederick, Dylan Floris, Gabrielle Guilbeaux, Charlie Floris, Kynan Broussard, Hunter Floris, Gage Floris, Mason Floris and Alyssa Floris; as for great grandchildren, “about a dozen” as Darrell always said with one expected in November; and his brothers and sisters, Anthony Floris, Alwin Floris, Mary Babin, Abden “BB” Floris, Maxine Derouen, Horace “Dean” Floris and Vanet Floris.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Terry Floris; and his brothers, Paul and Phillip Floris.
Darrell was never one to make a fuss about himself, and requested that his funeral be kept simple. To honor his wishes, his service will be held privately, and he will be laid to rest at Holy Family Mausoleum.
