Lula Belle “Lou” Toups was born at Peebles Plantation in Iberia Parish on August 19, 1929, to Robert and Rose Blanchard Broussard. She spent her formative years in The Tango on Avery Island until her family moved to New Iberia where she lived for the rest of her life. She passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, at the age of 96.
Lou generously devoted her time to family, friends, church and community. She enjoyed her time spent working for Doctors Jay and Mike Halphen at the Children’s Clinic.
Her passion was travel. Lou’s world was small living on Avery Island until a fateful first flight as a child on a small airplane sparked a wanderlust in her that lasted a lifetime.
She is survived by her children Cynthia Dore, Wiltz Toups, Robert Toups, and Danette Dorsey (Al), her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wiltz and her infant son, Wayne. Also preceding her were her parents Robert and Rose, her brother, Carol and his wife Ann, and her sister, Olivia Comeaux and her husband Lonest as well as her granddaughter, Jamie Dore Falcon and son in law, Jimmy Dore.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 1:00 pm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Fr. Connor Poirrier will officiate.
Mrs. Toups will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery following the mass.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church beginning at 12Noon until time of service.
The family would like to thank the staff of Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation as well as Hospice of Acadiana for their kind and loving care in her last days.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to her favorite charity, St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
