Mr. Peters was born on September 1, 1921 in Constantinople, Turkey the son of William and Antoinette Dalleggio Peters.
At two months old, he came to the United States with his mother through Ellis Island on November 11, 1921 to escape
the political unrest caused by the ongoing Turkish Revolution. His father was a member of the United States Navy who was assigned to the USS St. Louis at that time. His early childhood was spent in Philadelphia and he later moved to
New London with his mother and his younger brother Frank. He attended Chapman Technical High School where he played football. He enlisted during World War II and served overseas with the Army Air Corp, 425th Bomb Squadron that was assigned to the 308th Bombardment Group during the China Defensive/Offensive and India-Burma Campaigns. He received several Unit Citations and Awards while in the United States Army Air Corp. He later met and married Eleanor Ward on June 23, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in New London. "Pete" was employed for 30 years as a Mechanic at Pfizer in Groton until his retirement in 1983.
In addition to his wife, Eleanor, he is survived by his daughter Gail E. Cortina and her husband Jim of Waterford, his son Jeffery E. Peters and his wife Pamela of Virginia, and his four grandchildren, Brandon, Troy, Justin and Nicole and his great-grandson, Jayden. He was pre-deceased by his mother and his younger brother Frank.
Pete or Ed, as his friends and family knew him, was a member of Montville Post 10060 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Montville Golf League where he volunteered for several years whenever he was needed to do so. He loved to play golf and was also well known in the local bowling alleys since he bowled for several leagues during the years that he worked at Pfizer. He also liked to travel with his family to New York, Canada, Florida, Myrtle Beach and other vacation spots. While at Pfizer, he also traveled with his wife, Eleanor, to Barbados for a week with his "fellow" co-workers and their wives. To celebrate their 40th Anniversary, Pete and Eleanor were given a surprise trip to Hawaii, Oahu and Maui by their children. Pete always said that there was no place as beautiful as the "Hawaiian Islands" and often remarked that he wanted to visit them again with his entire family.
Pete was a big New York Giants fan and was very excited when his team "finally" won the Super Bowl. He said that it was a long time coming but well worth the wait. His favorite movies starred John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and he could tell you anything that you wanted to know about any of their movies. In his later years, one of his favorite things to do was to play "Phase 10" with his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson whenever they came to see him. He also had a soft spot in his heart for animals and there were always cats or dogs that were a part of the Peters household throughout the years that were treated as part of the family.
Our dad was a very giving person who would always do his best to help someone if they needed anything--no matter what time of day it was. He will be missed by everyone who knew and respected him for the type of person that he was. Our dad always taught us to treat everyone with the same respect that we wanted to be shown by others. Family always meant everything to him and he was always proud of our achievements. We are eternally grateful to have had such a wonderful dad, grandfather and great-grandfather and he will be in our thoughts forever.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to either help children at www.FeedTheChildren.org or to any of the following animal rescue groups: www.deltarescue.org, www.tigercreek.org or www.saveacat.org (Alley Cat Rescue) all four of which are very worthy charities that greatly need your support.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors, will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 2:00pm in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London, CT 06320. Please visit www.fultontherouxnewlondon.com for photos, tributes, and more information.
