

He was born in New Rochelle, NY, on August 18, 1921.
He graduated from the University of Michigan. During World War II he worked for Argus Camera Co., which manufactured specialized items for the military. After the war he worked for Minor Size Doll Clothes Co. He also worked for numerous doll and toy companies including Tiny Tears and Madame Alexander, where he perfected the time-motion-study which developed into the assembly line manufacturing concept for the toy industry. During 1951-1953 Mel was a member of the Toy Industry Advisory Committee in Washington, DC, which dealt with various basic materials used by the toy industry and their impact on prices. In 1954 he was a member of the President's Conference on Occupational Safety, the precursor to OSHA.
In 1961 Mel purchased Sherwood Candy Co. which manufactured large novelty lollipops and seasonal novelty candy filled items. The company enlarged to Sherwood Industries and moved to Holyoke, MA, combining with other companies in the field. He later moved on to the Thomas Faria Company in Uncasville, CT as head of purchasing. He retired from Faria and to keep busy he accepted the position of head of purchasing for The Day newspaper. After he left The Day, he became a business counselor for the SCORE organization for the SECT district.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Margaret. He is survived by his sister Miriam, and his brother Kenneth, both of Sarasota, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his daughter Beverly Deutschman and her husband Martin of Reading, PA, and his son Kenneth and his wife Sally of Quaker Hill; five grandchildren Russell and Bradley Deutschman, Serena Barone, Kyle and Corinna Seeger, and 10 great grandchildren.
