Frederick Henry Knecht, Sr., passed away peacefully at Slidell Memorial Hospital on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the age of 76. He was born on January 8, 1935 and was preceded in death by his parents Emelda Munsch Knecht and Frederick J. Knecht, his brother Leo Perry Knecht, his adopted mother, Mamie Musso Knecht. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life for 56 years, Joyce West Knecht; children, Dennis Knecht, Sr., (Cynthia), Denise K. Laudun (Keith), Penelope K. Walters (Bobby), Michele K. Henssler (Hans) and Frederick Henry Knecht, Jr., (Melissa); 16 grandchildren, Jessica (Matt), Samantha, D. J., Amber, Tess, Christopher, Jenna, Cody, Shelby, Sara, Hans, Zachary, Allyson, Dane, Alexis, and Riley; 3 great grandchildren, Ava Ann, Ayden and Ava Lynn.
He was a New Orleans Motorcycle Policeman, owned and operated Fred’s Gulf Service Station and owner and operator of Rigolets Marina. He worked at Municipal Court for Judge Sean Early. He was a member of the Coast Guard Reserve, a 32nd degree Mason; he is a member of Jerusalem Shriners, The Zoo Krewe Social Club, which he enjoyed immensely. He also enjoyed his monthly lunch at Southside Café with his retired policemen friends. He worked every October at First United Methodist Church’s pumpkin patch. Fred was a person of great integrity expressing his opinions on everything with inhibited candor and humorous style, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew him, inspiring emotions of love, laughter, bewilderment and joy. He loved to dance, was quite a character, but perhaps his greatest joy came from the waters of Lake Pontchartrain, from shrimping in the bayous of the Louisiana Marsh. This love was only topped by the love of his beloved wife, Joyce and his heartfelt commitment to his family.
