James Wade Mouton died on Saturday, April 2, 2011 after a short illness at Ochsner Hospital. Mr. Mouton was born on October 5, 1925 in New Orleans. He attended Holy Cross High School until he was drafted into the Army in WWII. James Mouton was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife Marie Alma Poche Mouton. He was the son of the late Stella Brockett Mouton and Salvador Mouton, Sr. He was preceded in death by his sister, Stella Marie Mouton and his brother, Salvador M. Mouton, Jr. James Mouton was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Leefe Poche and several sisters-in-laws. Mr. Mouton is survived by his nieces, Charmaine Mouton Kathmann (Richard) and Jeannine Mouton Fugarino (Anthony Paul) and three nephews Nicholas Robert Kathmann, Gregory Shane Kathmann and Stephen Patrick Fugarino. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Clyde Poche, Roland “Tan” Poche, Francis “Jack” Poche, Emily Poche plus several nieces and nephews in the Poche Family.
James Mouton was a jazz pianist and also a church organist. He played at Masses for numerous Catholic Churches in New Orleans every week for decades. Mr. Mouton taught piano to hundreds of young people in Greater New Orleans and considered teaching children as his most important job. James Mouton attended Loyola University to study music after WWII. Sgt. James Mouton spent his military service in France and Germany in the 63rd Infantry Division. He was a member of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans.) James Wade Mouton was an accomplished and prolific artist and painter. During the 47 years he painted in oils and acrylics, Mr. Mouton produced over 10,000 works of art. His work included thousands of sketches of religious images, jazz musicians, performers and politicians. His paintings conveyed all aspects of Southern living, New Orleans imagery, Louisiana landscapes, war scenes, religious Saints, and portraits. His painting style was impressionistic. Known for his jokes and sense of humor, Mr. Mouton loved to make people laugh with both his music and his art. James Mouton sold his paintings at A.L. Lowe’s Frame Shop on Carrollton Ave. and Oak St. He lived in New Orleans all of his life and his last residence was Chateau de Notre Dame Living Center. He will be missed by many. A wake will be held at Schoen’s Funeral Home on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. On Saturday, April 9, 2011, there will be a visitation at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church on Carrollton and Plum St. from 9:00am until 10:00am. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00am and he will be buried at St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Catholic Charities.
