

Honorable John P. Volz, Sr. passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2011 surrounded by his family in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 75. He was appointed First Assistant District Attorney under Jim Garrison, served as Special Agent with U.S. Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs which was predecessor to the DEA and was Chief Federal Public Defender in the Eastern District of Louisiana. He was appointed U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. He was Special Counsel for U. S. Attorney Dick Thornburgh and most recently was Administrative Law Judge in Tulsa. Born in New Orleans, John graduated from Jesuit High School and received his undergraduate and law degrees from Tulane University.He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ballard Volz; children, John P. Volz, Jr husband of Rebecca Exnicios Volz, Pierre (Trey) Briant husband of Gail Watson Briant, Nicole Briant Bonin wife of John Bonin; grandchildren, Victoria and Alexandra (Lexie) Volz,Jake, Kyle and Caroline Bonin; his sister Dora Volz Posey wife of the late Donald (Sonny) Posey and niece, Lisa Posey Thurman. Mr. Volz was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ortolano Volz and John Ignatius Volz, his wife Dorothy K. Volz and his wife Judy B. Volz, niece, Lynn E. Posey, M.D.,Ph.D. wife of Dr. John D. Olson.
Visitation will be at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans on Thursday, February 17, 2011 between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception, 130 Baronne Street, New Orleans on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery. The family would like to thank Drs. John P. Lynch and John R. Frame and his caregiver Betty Poole.
