

Matthew Stanislaus Ghergich III, entered peacefully into eternal life in the comfort of his own home in the presence of family on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 1:00 pm. He was 94 years old. Mr. Ghergich was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 42 years. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy as an Electrician's Mate Second Class during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of Saint Anthony of Pauda Parish and later became a prishner of Saint Louis King of France Catholic Church. He was a member of the Electrical Workers Union Local 130. Mr. Ghergich was the owner of Matt's Comer Bar for twenty-three years and also a member of the Mid-City carnival organization earlier in his life. Matthew played the clarinet in a band when he was a young man, he loved to dance with his wife, attend Saint's games with his son and grandson, crayfish with his kids, garden in his yard, design jewelry for his wife, build things for his family, play baseball, have cocktails at his favorite bar, Mug-z's, read his newspaper daily and be surrounded by family and friends. He was sentimental and soft inside and rough and tough on the outside.
He is the son of the late Matthew S. Ghergich Jr. and Josephine Melito. Survivors include: his beloved wife of 66 years, June Marie Toye Ghergich, his children; Lynda Jean (Dominick F. Bonura), Jo-Ann Toye (Gilbert Ordoyne), Jami Marie Ghergich and a son Matthew Stanislaus Ghergich IV husband of Carrie M. Monnier, Eight grandchildren: Justin D. (Janis) Bonura, Jessica Jean Bonura Nail, Ashlee W. (Mark) Ancalade, Sasha M. Ordoyne, Ahryonne O. (Christopher) Volpi, Pelyr O. (Cody) Monk, Brooke Ghergich, and Brittany Ghergich. Ten great-grandchildren: Emily A. Bonura, Justin D. Bonura Jr., Garrett D. Bonura, Gabriella J. Nail, June M. Nail, Daniel J. Nail, Nicholas G. Nail, Dominick L. Ancalade, Andre A. Ancalade, Francesca L. Ancalade with number 11 on the way. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his immediate family he is survived by a sister Virginia Mae Weidie.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to the visitation Thursday, December 20th beginning at 11:30 am followed with a Funeral Mass at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street with burial following in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana.
