Hubert Marson Buchanan Sr., age 96 of Tazewell, TN was born April 3, 1918 in his parents’ home in Tazewell and passed away in his home September 1, 2014. Not only was he a lifelong member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, but he was also its oldest living member until his death. According to his testimony, he was saved at the age of 21 in a cedar thicket that rested just below the house he was in when the Lord called him home, and he joined Liberty by experience of grace in the Revival of 1944. While at Liberty, he was a dedicated Sunday School teacher. He was an assistant Song leader for many years, but would later be the Song leader from 1977 to 1978 until he felt the Lord was finished with him, he was one of the original members of the Liberty Quarter. He was a grocery store owner during the depression where he supported many families on credit that was never fully repaid. Many a sleepless night was spent shouldering the burden of carrying hungry families through those dark days. Over the years, he owned the term “Jack of all Trades” by farming, building, being a maintenance man at Signal Knitting Mills for 24 years, and after he retired, spending his time gardening and tirelessly helping his children in every need or project that came their way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Haynes and Cordia Buchanan; his infant son Clifford Buchanan; daughter Helen Butcher; brothers Hughie, Neil and Andy Buchanan; his sisters Geneva Dotson, Mary McDaniel, Bertha Lynch, Annie Parrish and Estella Cook, grandson Adam Venable, great grandsons Billy and Shane Butcher; daughter-in-law Shirley Buchanan, sons-in-law Edward Butcher and Wiley Lawson and his first wife Velma Foster who was the mother of his first 4 children.

This is my final message to all my friends and loved ones. Do not sorrow my death as those that have no hope. I made my petition clear a long time ago. I am singing His praises in glory looking upon the face of my Savior who rescued me from hell by the letting of his own blood. I have long awaited this day where there is no more sorrow, no more pain, and no more strife. I ran with patience the race that was set before me, not without mistakes…there were many, but with a diligence of faith secure that my Savior would forgive and press onward with me as long as I sought his face, which I did. Precede with diligence your journey and make your petition clear for it is my fondest hope that all will follow me home to paradise.
