

Brooks, Jean G. “Granny”, 87, of Tazewell, Tennessee born on May 29, 1925, passed away peacefully at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville on Friday, December 14th, surrounded by her family. She was a Charter member and Trustee of Dogwood Heights Baptist Church in Tazewell, serving on the board of the Dogwood Heights Day Care. Mrs. Brooks graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 1969 and fulfilled her degree as a lifelong educator, teaching Elementary School for 30 years. Her love for her students extended beyond the classroom as she provided transportation for students without a ride to school, coached the basketball team at Highland View, and opened her home to Foreign Exchange Students and friends of the family. She served as a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Dogwood Homemakers Club, and Wegadigun Book Club. Mrs. Jean never met a stranger and devoted her life to her community, including volunteer work at the Claiborne County Nursing Home and Shared Blessings. Her patriotism to her country was remarkable as she left home following high school graduation to build airplanes for World War II, as a true Rosie the Riveter. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Sarah Green, brothers, Taylor and Darnell, sister, Ina and Nola, sons, Donald and Roger Brooks, special grandson, Brian McClure. She is survived by her husband, William M. (Bill) Brooks, Tazewell; sister, Grace Ramsey, Sneedville; sister-in-law, Ann Green, Bean Station; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Patsy Brooks, Tazewell; son, Robert Brooks, Tazewell. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason (Chrissy) Brooks, April (Ricky) Lefevers, Mitzi (Jay) Coatney, Amanda (Travis) Brown, and Kaitlyn Henry; great grand-children, Aimee and Chloe Lefevers, Mary-James and William Hall Brooks, Anna Kate Coatney, Joylynn Henry, and Savannah Ruth. She is also survived by special friend and “guardian angel” Shirley Young, her brother and sisters in-laws along with many nieces, nephews, special friends and pleasant acquaintances. Family will receive friends from 3-7PM Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at Dogwood Heights Baptist Church with funeral service to follow at 7:00PM with Rev. Roger Hansard and Dr. Roy Norris officiating. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 at the Fairview Cemetery.
