Muriel lived on Stinking Creek in Tennessee and attended elementary school there. She was saved at age 17 at Friendly Valley Baptist Church and was a long-time member of Underwood Grove Missionary Baptist Church. At Underwood she directed plays, taught Sunday School and was the WOM leader. Muriel went to Wynn Highschool in Habersham, TN, where she played basketball for many years. Her first job after high school was teaching school in Campbell County, she was very proud of this job and greatly enjoyed her time there. Muriel later went on to be the personnel manager at Rose's Department Stores for 35 years. After leaving Rose's Muriel was the owner and operator of Sew Fine Alteration Shop. Muriel's proudest achievement though was raising her children and three generations of grandchildren to love the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Elizabeth Cupp, husband Frank Chumley, son Franklin Chumley, brothers and sisters Mary, Tommy and Tilda, Cecil, Donna, Marion, Connie, Carolyn, and Sarah.
Muriel is survived by her children Jerry and wife Teru, Elizabeth and husband Arnold Gerding, Janie Chumley, David and wife Leanne, and Mechelle and husband Sam Daniels. A gaggle of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Siblings Ruby and husband Newt Steeley, Linda Cupp, Charlene Phelps, and Martin Cupp. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday February 10, 2026 from 5 until 7 PM at Underwood Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday February 11, 2026 at 10 AM in the Hooper Cemetery.
