Alan Mansfield died peacefully on January 11, 2021 after a long illness. Alan was an accomplished litigator and a devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University and attended Duke Law School, where he met his wife, Susan. After beginning his legal career at Phillips Nizer, he moved to Greenberg Traurig, where he was a shareholder, a member of the firm's Executive Committee and a co-chair of the firm's Global Litigation Practice. He represented clients in a wide range of litigation matters with a focus on First Amendment and appellate work. As a commissioner of the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination (1996-2020), he helped to select nominees for the New York Court of Appeals for nearly 25 years. He was involved with numerous charitable organizations, most notably serving as a long-time board member of Mobilization for Justice, formerly known as MFY Legal Services (1997-2020).
He loved the Upper West Side, the Hudson River, the birds in Sag Harbor, the theater, the Yankees, the Giants and Duke basketball. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, sons Daniel and Adam, sister Debbie, niece Tamara and many supportive relatives, colleagues and friends. He was buried at the family plot at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, N.J. on January 14, 2021.
