Alice Marie Stern (September 26, 1949-August 28, 2024) was born in a farmhouse in Hocking County near Logan, Ohio to mother Georgia Murray and father Earl Hutton, sister Nancy and brother Alvin (deceased). She loved the exciting world of fashion and accessories, and soon became a buyer at Lazarus in downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was there that she met Stanley Stern. They were married in 1976 and moved to New York City, a place she would call ‘home’ for all of her life. Their love was strong and creative, they began a successful costume jewelry company named for their two children, Lauren “L” and Samara. Alice went back to school mid-life to get her Master’s Degree in Social Work, she also began studying alternative healing modalities.
Her granddaughter Taylor was her pride and joy, and best friend. They had a truly special bond. She was generous and supportive with all of her chosen family and friends, encouraging everyone to follow their dreams, make art, invest in their body, mind, and souls.
Alice was such a generous space holder and giver. A true Mother tree. She’s been a fighting lioness and a silent observer. Softness mixed with the grit of a true New Yorker. She was thoughtful and truly considerate of the world around her. She was funny and full of life. She was a reader, seeker, and lifelong learner. She loved art, travel, new experiences, and adventure. She loved the beach. She was always listening to music and humming songs. She loved her dogs and all animals. She was on board for all big dreams and visions. She had a sharp mind for business, gave solid counsel, and listened so well. She was active in her spiritual growth, and believed in freedom and liberation for all beings in practice and action.
Witnessing her love, grief, grow, and shift according to her heart has paved the path for us to do the same, in our own ways, as she fully supported and advocated for. She loves us so much, her love lifts us, and we will continue to let her generous spirit move and live through us. She is survived by her children, Lauren “L” and Samara; her granddaughter Taylor; L’s partner Jay; her furry companion Izzy; her sister Nancy; Nancy’s children Deborah, Kim, and Ronda; and all their children and grandchildren. All those she touched and all those that loved her will miss her greatly.
Donations in her name can be made to West Side Community Garden on 89th street on her block, which she visited almost daily. The garden brought her joy, inspiration, and peace.
A funeral service for Alice will be held Friday, August 30, 2024 at 10:30am to 11:30am at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, Frnt 1, New York, NY 10023.
