
Dr. Carol K. Hermann passed away on July 7 with visits by her family after a brief illness. She was born in New Jersey in 1937 to Joseph Kaminske and Frances Tuite Kaminske. She was educated by the Sisters of St. Benedict. She studied textile design at Syracuse. After graduation she worked for art galleries in New York City where she developed an interest in Spanish art. She represented Juan Hernandez Pijuan and they became lifelong friends.
In the 1960s, during summer vacation in Fire Island, she met the love of her life, Lawrence Hermann. They were married in 1964. They settled in Manhattan and designed a summer home in the Hamptons. Carol and Larry traveled extensively for business and pleasure. They were involved in cultural activities from museums, operas and jazz. Larry predeceased her in 2011.
Although Carol enjoyed working in the arts, she was driven to help people more directly. In the beginning of the 1970s she went back to take pre med courses and graduated from medical school in 1979. She did her internal medicine and psychiatry residencies at Mt. Sinai Medical School. She worked for Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the. Veterans Hospital and Northwell Health until her retirement in 2019. Her specialty was geriatric psychiatry: both practice and research.
Carol maintained her interest in the arts, current events and animal welfare kept her passionately involved in society. She could easily discuss science, politics, art, music and culture while maintaining a sophisticated and elegant New York style.
Carol was always an inspiration through her constant curiosity and professional dedication to helping people and animal welfare. She showed you could accomplish what you wanted by believing and working hard.
