Honey Green (nee Kushner) passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025, in Jericho, NY. She was 94. Born March 2, 1931, in Paterson, NJ, she shared sweetness and light, joy and laughter throughout her life. Honey grew up in the Bronx, first on Bronx Park South and then on 179th Street, big sister to brothers Coleman and Robert “Bobby” Kushner. An especially gifted student, she skipped several grades in public school (PS 3, PS 44, and Evander Childs High School) and graduated from Hunter College at the age of 20 having majored in Education.
She loved being a counselor at Woodcliff summer camp; there she met the love of her life, her future husband Arthur “Art” Green. As newlyweds, Honey and Art relocated to San Antonio, Texas for Art to fulfill his military duty. They couldn’t wait to return to New York, eventually settling in Hicksville, Long Island where they raised their children Cindy and Paul.
Birthdays were celebrated with custom-made decorations, hats, and cakes. Family vacations to the Catskills Game Farm, Washington, D.C., Florida, and Paris, France formed life-long happy memories. Honey and Art created a magical childhood for Cindy and Paul. It was never a burden for them to drive to dance and music lessons, Hebrew School, and sports events. Honey didn’t like pets, but she didn’t stop Paul from collecting turtles, seahorses, chameleons, and fish. She encouraged whatever her children pursued and delighted in their accomplishments.
Honey forged a 43-year career teaching kindergarten for most of those years at Abbey Lane School in Levittown, NY. She was beloved by her students, parents, and colleagues whom she counted among her dearest friends. She loved theatre and musicals; Saturday mornings were filled with the sounds of Honey vacuuming and singing along to Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Man of La Mancha, and Cabaret.
Throughout her life Honey had soooo many friends, as she always stayed in touch with all her childhood, sleepaway camp, college, Hicksville, bridge and teacher friends.
She consistently sought the unusual and the unique. Honey was a true fashion maven, always dressed in beautiful patterns, textures, and styles. Similarly, their home was decorated with curated items from faraway lands, collected while traveling each summer. Meticulous, yet warm and inviting, home-improvement was a collaborative activity showcasing Art’s work and Honey’s keen eye for style. Here, they delighted in hosting family circles and celebrations, and entertaining friends for games of Bridge. Highly skilled, Honey passionately played with several different groups, earning accolades and trophies over the years.
At the Bristal, Honey earned Resident of the Month, enjoyed singing in the choir, and played competitive rounds of Rummikub, Scrabble, and Bingo. She would enjoy meals and activities from 7:30 am till 7:30 pm every day. She never lost her sense of humor, her hatred for eggs and bananas, and her love of humanity.
Honey was the beloved wife of the late Arthur M. Green and, after Art’s passing, the wife of the late Alex Garfinkel. She was the devoted daughter of Harry and Doris Kushner, and sister to the late Coleman (Marilyn) and Robert (Sheila) Kushner. Honey was a loving mother to Cindy Green (Lee Cohen) of NYC and Paul (Elizabeth) Green of Acton, Massachusetts. She was also a wonderful grandmother to Claudia Cohen (Jeff Rand), Ben Cohen (Olivia Arnow), Aliza Cohen, and to Aiyana Green, each of whom rightly believes that they were Honey’s most-special favorite. She had the great fortune to have the most amazing great-grandson: Dax Cohen Rand.
