James Devaney

DEVANEY, James “Buddy" of New York, NY, aged 77, went to be with God on Friday, March 22nd, 2019 after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Buddy was born in the Bronx to James and Katherine (McPartland) Devaney of Ireland on February 2nd,1942. Buddy is survived by his daughter Micaela Devaney Darling, son in law Michael and granddaughter Stella of Chappaqua, New York. He will join his predeceased sister Mary Rice in heaven as well as his former wife Anita Finnegan Devaney. Buddy is survived by many nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces, extended family, dear friends and his long time partner Ludmila Paskal.

A graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, Buddy was an avid Jeopardy watcher often playing against his daughter and son in law. He had a wealth of knowledge and real world experience. A friend to many and loved by many, Buddy was a magnetic and generous person, funny, witty, a good dancer and someone who always had your back. Buddy lived on his own terms and was man of quiet faith.

Known for his generous spirit, Buddy was the recipient of two awards: The Heart of Gold Award from The Special Needs Activity Center for Kids (SNACK) for being an “instrumental supporter in getting the non-profit organization off the ground.” Just this month he received the Father Pat Morris Award from The Frances Pope Foundation for his “dedication, counsel and for being quietly instrumental in the success of their charitable works.” He served as Board President of the Hampshire House where he lived for 15 years.

Many will remember Buddy for his wisdom, advice, generosity and humor. Always dapper, he valued his friendships dearly. The family extends a deep felt gratitude to all his friends who have been like extended family. Buddy now joins many great friends who have gone before him.

A wake will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home in New York City on Monday, March 25th, 2019 from 6-8 pm and Tuesday, March 26th from 2-5pm and 7-9pm. A Catholic funeral mass will be said by Buddy’s cousin, Dominican Friar John Maria Devaney, OP at St. Monica's Church on Wednesday, March 27th, 2019 at 10am. Flowers are welcome; Contributions may be sent to the Vascular Birthmark Foundation in memory of Buddy Devaney.
