Lewis was born on March 9, 1940 to Louis and Mary Bologna in Brooklyn NY. His early childhood was spent in Brooklyn, always near to family. As he grew his family moved several times in New York and Long Island and he graduated from Bayside High School in 1958. After attending Adelphi University he joined the Air Force in 1961.
After his service to our country, Lewis was a highly sought-after young executive known for his intellect, leadership, and sales skills. His career trajectory, and love trajectory were on a collision course when he was offered a significant promotion that required a relocation to Chicago. He proposed to Barbara Hummell so that they could move to Chicago “her way”—married!
They married in Barbara’s family’s house in September of 1964 and then headed off to Chicago. Circumstances changed quickly, they returned to NY mid 1965 with their first of two sons on the way. Glenn Barton was born in August of 1965, and Gregory Barton was born in September 1968.
Hard work and tenacity in the New York City business world during the mid 1960’s paid off and opportunities arose for Lewis. He founded his first business at the age of 26 in 1966…Sigma Quality Foods. Sigma grew it into a major corporation in the food manufacturing and packaging industries. At its height, the company employed over 150 people and was running three shifts around the clock. He sold the business to Sugar Foods in 1988 and took an office on Madison Avenue where he would consult and invent new packaging solutions as well as pursue other business opportunities. He would go on to own 8 patents throughout his career, presided over industry associations, and spoke as a motivational speaker.
After his retirement in 2010, Lewis focused on his passions and interests. He and Barbara enjoyed watching their sons grow and build families of their own, and they loved to host holidays and summer parties in their Wainscott home for the entire family.
They were also avid travelers and patrons of the arts. In 1992 they accomplished their long sought after goal of travelling around the world! As patriotic Americans they are also proud to say they visited every state in our great country. In the 1990’s Lewis found his voice in creative writing and published a novel as well as several short stories over the subsequent three decades.
Lewis was known for finding interesting lectures and exhibitions. In the time of paper tickets, he would have stacks as thick as a phone book on his desk for all the activities he planned. They would attend plays and concerts several times a month as they enjoyed splitting their time between Manhattan, Wainscott, and Naples FL.
Lewis is survived by his wife of 59 years Barbara Barton, his sons Glenn and Greg Barton and their families, as well as many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
