Margot was born Margot Nathan on January 10, 1925, in Cologne, Germany, to Theodore and Herta Nathan. In 1938, at the age of 13, she and her family immigrated to the United States to escape Nazi persecution. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Herbert.
Upon arriving in New York, Margot attended the Calhoun School and later became a talented pattern maker, working for what would become her future family. A Passover Seder invitation from her future father-in-law-in-law introduced her to Albert Gompertz, her future husband. They were married for 60 years.
Margot went on to have a long and successful career in retail, excelling as a saleswoman at Lord & Taylor and Revillon in Saks Fifth Avenue. She was also involved in her Jewish community, actively participating in Congregation Habonim in Manhattan, where she served proudly as president of the Sisterhood.
Margot cherished her summers on Fire Island and later embraced her years in Florida, finding joy with her many friends.
She is survived by her loving children, Carole (Ron) and Mark (Penny), four devoted grandchildren, and five cherished great-grandchildren. Her family is grateful for the compassionate care she received at United Hebrew in New Rochelle in her later years.
Donations in Margot’s memory may be made to United Hebrew of New Rochelle, 391 Pelham Road, New Rochelle, NY 10805.
A Graveside Service will be held at Cedar Park Cemetery, located at 735 Forest Ave., Paramus, NJ, 07675. The service is scheduled for October 5, 2025, starting at 1:00 pm.
