Miri was born to Alexander Schechter and Rachel Glick, both Holocaust survivors, who rebuilt their lives and raised Miri and her younger sister, Judith, in Aleșd, a small town where a close-knit community of survivors created a foundation of resilience, care, and shared humanity. These early experiences shaped Miri’s enduring values of compassion, connection, and strength.
She later emigrated to Israel and, as a student of languages, came to the United States to study English for what was intended to be a single year. During that time, she met Dr. Eli Marcovici, the love of her life. Their partnership was marked by deep devotion, mutual respect, and a profound personal bond. Together they built a rich and vibrant life and raised three children—Eyal, Keri, and Amy—who were the center of Miri’s world. She was a devoted and proud grandmother to Luca and Brighton, whom she cherished deeply. Throughout her later years, she faced illness with determination and grace, continuing treatment in order to spend as much meaningful time as possible with her family.
Miri approached life as a perpetual student. She had an enduring love of learning and reading, and she engaged with the world thoughtfully and curiously. She devoted herself fully to her family, creating a home filled with warmth, care, and love. She also played a central role in managing her husband’s ophthalmology practice and supported his work on international medical missions, where they helped bring sight-restoring surgeries to those who would not otherwise have access to care.
Wherever she went, Miri formed deep and lasting friendships. Her warmth, openness, and natural charm drew people to her, and she made others feel seen, valued, and welcome. She approached relationships with authenticity and generosity, treating everyone with equal regard and genuine interest. She had a gift for creating community and took great joy in the connections she built throughout her life.
Miri was known for her humor, elegance, and appreciation of life’s pleasures. She enjoyed hosting gatherings, dancing, traveling, fashion, antiquing, literature, and public broadcasting. She brought energy and intention to everything she did, and her presence was both engaging and comforting to those around her.
She combined a practical, direct manner with a deeply intuitive approach to life. Thoughtful and reflective, she trusted her instincts and allowed them to guide her decisions and experiences. Her life was not defined by rigid structure but by a willingness to embrace complexity, depth, and discovery.
Above all, Miri valued family, friendship, kindness, and wisdom. She took a sincere and enduring interest in the lives of others and remained deeply engaged with those she loved throughout her life.
In keeping with her lifelong generosity and concern for others, Miri donated her body to science. In her memory, donations may be made below.
