Monica Y. Michell, M.D., passed away at the age of 69 on April 23, 2025. She is survived by her husband, Bill Chirico, and their daughter Isabella. Monica was born in Bucharest, Romania. She and her parents, Jacques and Irina, fled the communists when she was nine, briefly living in Rome before settling in White Plains, New York.
Monica received a Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College. She completed her residency in psychiatry at NYU Medical Center and her child fellowship at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was a graduate of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY). A devoted psychiatrist, Monica practiced adult and child and adolescent psychiatry for over 30 years in New York City. In addition to her private practice, she was a psychiatrist at the School of Visual Arts and was the Chair of PANY’s Child Psychotherapy Program. During her career, she served as a clinical supervisor at NYU and as Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Monica sought a balance between family and career. She enjoyed the beaches of Long Island and walking her dog in Central Park with her dear friends. Monica was a voracious reader, as well as a gracious hostess. She loved to laugh and was always eager to catch Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update and Jon Stewart’s monologues. She relished traveling with her family and her beloved cousin, Georg Teutsch, of Wannweil, Germany, and his family. She will be missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and patients.
A memorial service for Monica will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Chas. Peter Nagel Funeral Directors, 352 East 87th Street, Apt 1824, New York, NY 10128. Refreshments to be served immediately following the service.
