My deepest condolences to you, I continue to have you Michael and sweet Eliot in my thoughts and prayers. Every single time I pass by Apt . #6E (my apartment being #6D) my mind and heart reaches out to All the wonderful memories I shared with this awesome individual (both friend/neighbor) .In addition I truly miss all the wonderful music/singing of Steven's talented being! Oh, how I miss those tunes finding their way through the wall; entertaining me!= Rest-In- Heavenly Peace, dearest Steven.   I am quite certain All those who have gone before You are enjoying Your talents "&" without any/all cover charges! {'lol- 🤗😋}= Needles to say; you continue to be sorely missed!

I am just now hearing the devastating news of Steven's passing.  
I worked with Steven as my vocal coach in the 1990s when I needed some new audition material.  He became a trusted voice for me as I was advancing my career in musicals and I had very little musical training.  He once reprimanded me saying "You sing too well not to sing better" and he sent me to a voice teacher which put me onto a very successful path in musical theatre for several years to come.  He would often discuss his frustrations with me as he was trying to get "A gentleman's Guide...: written and was struggling to get the rights to the story.   I cherish the hours we spent in his apartment/studio, singing talking, kvetching, and sharing.  His dedication to his art, his enthusiasm for his student, and his love of the theatre will forever be an inspiration!  Rest in Peace, my friend!

I am surprised and saddened to learn of Steve’s passing. I remember going to hear him play at a piano bar on Long Island when he, a the younger brother of a friend, was in high school and seeing his immense and emerging talent.  My thoughts are with his family and may his memory be for a blessing.  Peace. Melissa Hager

I remember growing up and spending time in the Lutvak home on Long Island. It was always a flurry of activity - piano playing, political discourse, food, and lots of older brother teasing of "the other Ellen." It was a warm and loving family and I was always happy to be a part of it.

It's funny how your mind flashes back to your childhood when you hear of something tragic like this happening. A safer, happier place. May Steven always be that happy, smiling, talented, funny guy at the piano. Love to Sylvia, Larry, Ellen, and the entire extended family.

I met Steven when I was 20 at NYU. He was accompanying in a class. We went on to work together. He hired me to sing at some chi chi Christmas party or  something like that. I was slightly in awe and intimidated -just a bit- but I fell in love with this brilliant  man , his talent, his artistry. I loved his song Inside My Body Is A Dancer so much,  he let me sing it for one of my  one woman shows in the '80's at Don't Tell Mama's or Eighty Eight's . I was honored.  Steven was one of the most vital influential creative  inspirations of my early career.  And although there were years that we were not in touch I was there in support with many others  during the legal battle for the rights to  Gentleman and then cheering from Los Angeles when it won the  Tony! Recently, Steven found out about my artistic struggle with singing after 20 years of silence, and introduced me to another force of nature Joan Lader.  Steven changed my life twice, once as a 20 year old and once as a 57 year old. His talent, his composing, his lyrics , his story telling, his voice- god his voice... all indicated the immeasurable vastness of his heart and his love. My sincerest sorrow and prayers are with his husband and child and all who feel his loss as profoundly as I do. I know my job is to have him live in me and onward through my creative expression .  The world is so much a better place because he was here.

I was so shocked and sad to hear about Steven's passing.  Steven and I grew up around the corner from each other in Merrick L.I.  We went to  high school together and sang in the school choir.  An amazingly creative, warm and talented guy who I knew, even then, would accomplish great things. My heartfelt thoughts are with Mrs. Lutvak, Larry and Ellen and his husband and daughter .  Please know he touched alot of lives and I know mine is all the better for knowing him.  ..........love Howie Lawrence

Steven and I met at a residency he did at my university in South Carolina over ten years ago. We immediately hit it off, both because of a mutual acquaintance as well as being fellow composers. He was warm, genuine, and modest. I feel the loss keenly, as people of his humanity are rare. May his memory forever be for a blessing.

To all of Steven‘s dearest friends, family, and loved ones, Steven and I had a very special musical working relationship. We had admired each other’s talent, and I’d like to think that I was helpful in his musical projects. When I produced his album THE TIME IT TAKES , I can’t remember a better experience in the studio. I will always carry that time with me. 

We hadn’t spoken for a while, and yet the loss is still so great. I can’t remember exactly how we met, but the friendship was instant, and I remember my conversation with him that created the song, The Dinner Party, as it was about my relatives who came from Russia. 

To his family, there are just no words to express this great sadness and loss you must feel.  I lost my brother suddenly six months ago, and it’s still rings piercingly in my heart. I feel that same way about Steven, and I know that all of us who worked and met and loved Steven  feel the same way too. His memory will be a blessing, but also importantly,  his music will live on, and that is the best thing we can hope for. Please take care of yourselves , and remember him fondly; as I will always . To Steven's family and loved ones- I knew Steven Lutvak for almost 30 years. As a musician, as an arranger, a a performer, as a most supportive accompanist.
He was the kindest, most supportive person to all of us who worked with him. He had a beautiful singing voice and remarkable musicianship and he was so witty and so clever- and he made his hard work seem so effortless!
But most of all, he was a kind and warm human being. He will be missed.
