Susan Marie Hurrell, 59, of White Plains, NY, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025. Susan was a creative, industrious, loving, and generous woman; a devoted wife, sister, daughter, and a dear friend and valued colleague to those who knew her.
Susan was born in New York City and spent her childhood in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. As a child, Susan was an accomplished swimmer. In high school, she was a lifeguard and coached the swim team at the village municipal pool. After graduating from Binghamton University, she returned to New York City, where she began her career in advertising and the healthcare sector.
Susan married William Nickles in September 2001, just a few days after the tragic events of 9/11. Neighbors, strangers, and friends cheered the couple as their horse drawn carriage taxied from the church to their wedding reception, along the empty streets of Manhattan.
Susan was an avid reader, loved animals, especially dogs, and enjoyed the time she spent as an ASPCA volunteer. In their years together, she and her husband shared many happy hours fishing in the waters off Martha’s Vineyard and Montauk.
Susan is survived by her husband William Nickles, her mother Rose Marie Hurrell, and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Hurrell.
Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 6-9 p.m. at the Chas Peter Nagel Funeral Home, 352 East 87th Street, New York, NY 10128. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., in the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, 230 East 90th Street, New York, NY 10128.
