Tommie Gene Chumbley, 74, of Newburgh, Indiana, passed away peacefully with family at his bedside Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.
Tommie is survived by his children, Kim Detrinis, Chasity, Jaiehlyn, and Heighdyn Chumbley, and honorary daughter, Emma Wood; grandchildren, Aaron (Kimber) Detrinis, Frank Miller, Caleb Krist, Ahbree Shake, and honorary grandson, Javen Noble; great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Sarah Detrinis, plus rescue dog Louie, and "all those damn cats". He is also survived by his sisters, Henrietta Kissel, Nancy Scales, Ginger Chumbley Vailes, and Patty Blanton, and loving friends, Anita Noble, Steve Shofstall and Joe May.
Tommie was predeceased by his parents, Clinton Chumbley and Parvin and Imogene Powell; sister, Vicky Lynn Maury; brother, Henry Chumbley; brother-in-law, Richard Kissel, and former wife, Sheila Shofstall.
He was a loving, stubborn man who touched the lives of many throughout his lifetime. He was an Air Force Veteran, stationed at Cape Cod. Tommie was a special education teacher at Castle High School and was beloved by staff and students alike. He loved watching basketball and football. He was a huge Western movie fan; his all-time favorite was "Shane".
Tommie was the best dad and friend that anyone could ask for. He loved his family so much and did anything and everything he could for them. Tommie enjoyed being with his kids, and taking Louie with him to the gas station for Mountain Dew and smokes or just to drive around.
The family would especially like to thank day shift Jennifer and night shift Jennifer at Gateway for their excellent, compassionate care.
There will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
