Carolyn Evans, born on June 7, 1937, in Los Angeles, was one of seven children of James and Della Mae Evans. Her father, Reverend James Edward Evans Sr., served as the senior pastor at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Carolyn hailed from Watts, growing up on the corner of 112th and Grape Street. She would often proudly proclaim... "I'm from Watts." She attended LAUSD schools in the vicinity. In 1955, she married Leroy Hamilton Sr., with whom she had five children: Linda, Leroy Jr., Arthur, Joseph, and James. The family relocated to Pacolma in the early 1960s but maintained their connection to Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in LA, attending Sunday services faithfully. Her greatest accomplishment lay in raising her five children, who continue to thrive. Four Black men and one Black woman, their success stands as a testament to her dedication and love. And her love extended to kids in the community. She operated a daycare center during the 90s and NBA great Jrue Holiday was one of her favorite kids. In 2001, Carolyn moved to Olive Manor Senior Apartments, where she spent twenty-three years accompanied by her spirited dog, Booster, a beloved figure in the community. She lived fearlessly and loved fully. She sent greeting cards to everybody on birthdays and holidays, including the residents of her senior housing complex. They were from Dollar Tree, one of her favorite stores; always signed "From mother and Booster." Carolyn enjoyed playing bingo, trips to the casino, buying Scratchers, and solving all kinds of puzzles. An avid sports enthusiast, she passionately followed the Denver Broncos and cheered for LeBron James, Venus and Serena Williams, Coco Gauff. and women's sports teams. Phone calls often ended abruptly when her favorites were on TV. And you definitely knew not to interrupt her during Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. In January, Carolyn received a cancer diagnosis and made it clear she did not wish to undergo curative care, content with the life she had lived and steadfast in her faith in God. Her last moments of full awareness were spent watching the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship game in the ICU, where she didn't hesitate to share her opinion that "the women are better than the men." Following the game, she grew weary and entered hospice care the next day.Her final words... "I love all my kids, but I want to go home." In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by Leroy Sr., grandson Leon, siblings LaCornia, James, Eunice, and Louis, and her beloved Booster. Carolyn is survived by her five children and their spouses: Linda (Ron), Leroy (Ronnie), Arthur (Jackie), Joe (Zina), and James (Debbie); nine grandchildren: Brandon, Lauren, Arthur Jr., Shayron, Anthony, Greg, Marquez, James Jr., and Jason; and eight great-grandchildren: Rhani, Rhyli, Christopher, Ryan, Anthony Jr., Brandon, Cymalya, and Desmond; two siblings, Frances and Joseph, and brother-in-law Marvin, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Rest in eternal peace mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, sister, friend.
