

Michael Donald McSkane passed peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91 in his Newhall, California home on January 8, 2025. Mike was born to Bernard and Mary McSkane on July 6, 1933, in Ireland. While growing up in Monaghan, Ireland he graduated secondary school and agricultural college. After moving to England, he met and married the love of his life, Vera, in 1957. Mike dedicated nearly 10 years to the British Royal Air Force, travelling to multiple countries where he and his young family experienced diverse cultures and environments. In 1967 Mike & Vera embarked on another adventure, immigrating to California. They had two more children and eventually settled in Newhall, CA.
Mike displayed a strong work ethic early in life, working on his parents’ farm and helping in the family store all while attending school. Mike completed his nursing program in England and obtained his RN license in CA. He completed his BA degree in 1980. Mike went on to become a Program Director for the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health, Health Inspection Division until retirement in 1995.
Mike will be remembered for his zest for life, sense of humor and quick wit. He loved reciting Shakespeare as well as Irish Gaelic quotes. He was gifted with the ability to recall entire verses from his childhood days. And always had a willing audience, especially with his grandchildren.
His favorite activities included, running, biking, hiking, horseback riding, shooting and traveling with his wife. He was a devoted father and participated in the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization.
Mike is survived by his wife Vera McSkane, brothers, Donal, Harry, and Charlie, sisters Kathleen, Maeve and Colette; children Tim, Peter, Fiona, Sioban, Clare and Grainne; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
