Bob was born in Beatrice, Nebraska. A resident of Newhall. CA for 32 years, Bob, a retired salesman, died at Holy Cross Providence Hospital on February 8, 2012, age 82.
Bob attended John Marshall High School in LA, as well as, LA City College. He served in the U.S. Navy as a storekeeper/cook on the USS Badoeng Straight during the Korean War.
Bob's occupations included being a cook at DuPars Restaurant; a salesman at Smith's Market in Panorama city, Harter's Dist Co, and Cal Panel. He also owned his own business, Bob's Carbide Cutters.
Bob was a member of the Shriners (Masons), the Elks, and the 10-10 Camping Club. He was an avid reader. His hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, golf, gardening, and cooking.
Bob is survived by his wife of over 58 years Virginia (Parque) Phelan; son Patrick (Patsy) Phelan; daughter Debi (Jim) Ginnetti; grandchildren: Robert (Michelle) Phelan, Ami (John) Chesebrough, Katie Ginetti, and Michael Ginnetti; great-grandchildren: Annie Rose, James Marccus, Brooke Elizabeth; sister, Yvonne Phelan; sister, Judy Smith; many nieces & nephews.. Bob was preceded in death by his parents John & Cornellia Phelan, sister Donna Brown, and brother Jack Phelan.
The family wrote, "Affectionately known as 'Papa' by his grandchildren and 'The Fish Whisperer' by his fishing buddies, Bob was truly the kindest gentleman one could ever meet. His quick wit and sense of humor brightened every day. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, and grandfather. With his wife by his side, he drifted up to a much better place with the Lord, and will forever watch over his loved ones."
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:00am at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary in the Chapel of the Oaks, 23287 N. Sierra Highway, Newhall, CA.
